For the Kelimutu sunrise most people take a car with a driver — the road from Ende to Moni is about 1.5 to 2 hours of sharp mountain turns. Scooters suit getting around Ende town and Moni village. A SIM or International Driving Permit is required for self-drive, and the lakes have a separate park entrance fee.

How do I get to Kelimutu from Ende?
It is about 1.5 to 2 hours by road from Ende to Moni at the base of Kelimutu, on winding mountain roads. Most visitors take a car with a driver to make the pre-dawn start for sunrise.
