Komodo dragons and monitor lizards (biawak) are cousins, but they are not the same animal. The Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis) is the world's largest lizard, lives only on a few islands in East Nusa Tenggara, and has a venomous bite. The biawak most Indonesians know is the common water monitor (Varanus salvator), a smaller, slimmer lizard that lives near water and ranges right across Southeast Asia. Here is how to tell them apart.

Komodo vs biawak at a glance

Komodo (Varanus komodoensis) Biawak / water monitor (Varanus salvator)
Size Up to about 3 m and 150 kg, the largest lizard on Earth Smaller and slimmer, far lighter
Bite Lower-jaw venom glands (anticoagulant toxins) Relies on jaws, teeth, and claws; no significant venom
Range Endemic to a few islands in NTT only Widespread across Southeast Asia
Habitat Dry savanna islands Near water: rivers, swamps, coasts
Body Bulky and heavily muscled Slim, with a flattened tail for swimming

Size is the clearest difference

A Komodo dragon is built like a heavyweight: bulky, muscular, and up to roughly 3 metres and 150 kilograms. A common biawak is longer-looking for its weight but much slimmer and lighter, and it rarely comes close to a Komodo's bulk. If the animal looks heavy and slow on thick legs, it is a Komodo; if it looks slender and quick near water, it is a biawak.

The bite works differently

The Komodo dragon has venom glands in its lower jaw, producing toxins that lower blood pressure and stop blood from clotting. The common water monitor does not have a significant venomous bite; it relies on strong jaws, sharp teeth, and claws to catch prey. This is one reason a Komodo can bring down much larger animals than a biawak can.

Where each one lives

This is the part people miss most. Komodo dragons are endemic, found in the wild only on Komodo, Rinca, Gili Motang, Gili Loh Sami, and parts of Flores. The common biawak lives almost everywhere in Southeast Asia, usually close to water, which is why you might spot one in a city river or a coastal mangrove. So a large lizard outside NTT is almost certainly a biawak, not a Komodo.

See a real Komodo dragon

The only way to see a wild Komodo dragon is in Komodo National Park, reached by boat from Labuan Bajo. If you are planning a trip, message us on WhatsApp at 0812 2202 8945 and we will help arrange a Komodo day trip or boat charter, with a ranger who knows the islands.

FAQ

What is the difference between a Komodo dragon and a biawak?

The Komodo dragon is the world's largest lizard, lives only in a few NTT islands, and has a venomous bite. The common biawak (water monitor) is smaller, slimmer, lives near water, ranges across Southeast Asia, and has no significant venom.

Is a Komodo dragon a type of biawak?

They are both monitor lizards (genus Varanus), so they are relatives. But the Komodo is its own species and far larger, while the everyday biawak people see is usually the water monitor, Varanus salvator.

Which is more dangerous, Komodo or biawak?

The Komodo dragon, because of its size and venomous bite. A common biawak can bite and scratch but is not in the same league and usually flees from people.

Where can I see a real Komodo dragon?

Only in Komodo National Park, on islands like Komodo and Rinca, reached by boat from Labuan Bajo with a ranger.
