Lake Sentarum is a rare seasonal lake located in Kapuas Hulu Regency, West Kalimantan (Borneo), Indonesia. What makes it extraordinary is its dramatic transformation: during the rainy season, it swells to depths of 6–14 meters, becoming a vast inland sea, while in the dry season it shrinks to shallow pools and marshland — revealing fish-rich lowlands that local communities depend on. It appears and disappears like clockwork, and that is exactly what makes it one of Indonesia's most fascinating natural wonders.

What Makes Lake Sentarum So Special?

Spectacular Seasonal Transformation

The defining feature of Lake Sentarum is its seasonal cycle. In the wet season, the entire area floods into a wide expanse of water reaching 6 to 8 meters deep — sometimes hitting 14 meters at certain points. When the dry season arrives, the water recedes dramatically, leaving behind small ponds, swamps, and exposed forest floor between the trees. This ebb and flow creates entirely different landscapes throughout the year, making every visit a unique experience.

When the water drops, fish become concentrated in shallow pools, making them easy to catch — a natural bounty that local communities have relied on for generations.

Extraordinary Biodiversity

Lake Sentarum is not just visually stunning — it is ecologically rich. The lake and its surrounding Sentarum National Park are home to more than 265 species of freshwater fish, including the rare super red arowana (Scleropages formosus), found almost exclusively in this region. The park also shelters 147 mammal species, 310 bird species, and 64 reptile and amphibian species.

Rare and endangered animals such as the Bornean orangutan, proboscis monkey, clouded leopard, and false gharial crocodile can all be encountered within the national park boundaries.

A Vital Ecological Role

Lake Sentarum plays a critical role in regulating the Kapuas River — the longest river in Indonesia. During the rainy season, the lake absorbs excess water from the Kapuas, acting as a giant natural reservoir. In the dry season, it releases that stored water back into the river system, maintaining stable water flow year-round. It is essentially nature's own flood management system.

Rich Cultural Heritage and Local Wisdom

Beyond its natural appeal, the Sentarum area is home to several indigenous Dayak communities, including the Dayak Iban, Sebaruk, Sontas, Kenyah, and Punan peoples. They live in traditional longhouses known as betang, shared by multiple families — a reflection of their communal way of life.

These communities practice sustainable use of the lake's resources: fish are caught using traditional, non-destructive methods, and the region is also known for producing high-quality wild forest honey. Their relationship with the land is a masterclass in living in balance with nature.

Activities at Lake Sentarum

Lake and Swamp Forest Boat Tours

One of the best ways to explore Sentarum is by renting a wooden boat from local villagers and gliding through the lake and swamp forests. This gives you a rare, up-close look at wildlife in their natural habitat — hornbills, monkeys, and even saltwater crocodiles have been spotted along the waterways. It is as raw and real as nature gets.

Fishing in the Wild

If you enjoy fishing, Lake Sentarum is an absolute dream destination. The lake teems with freshwater fish, especially during the dry season when fish concentrate in shallower waters. Just keep in mind: there are no equipment rental facilities here. Bring your own rods, lines, and bait from home. It is worth every bit of the effort — fishing in this wild setting is an unforgettable experience.

Sunset Watching Over the Lake

Do not underestimate the power of a quiet sunset at Lake Sentarum. Framed by dense jungle on all sides, the lake transforms at dusk — deep blue water, lush green forest reflections, and a blazing orange sky create a color palette unlike any beach or hilltop sunset. Slow down, breathe it in, and let the moment stick.
