Bismillah. Snorkeling at Komodo is one of those experiences guests tell us about long after their trip ends. But if this is your first time snorkeling, or your first time snorkeling in waters with real current, there are a few practical things worth preparing before you board the boat.

The Bajo Rental team has handled gear rentals and trip bookings for thousands of guests in Labuan Bajo since 2016. This guide pulls together the questions first-time snorkelers ask us most, plus the field conditions they usually don't know about until they're already on the boat.

5 Komodo Snorkel Spots That Are Beginner-Friendly

Komodo National Park has dozens of snorkel spots. For first-timers, we usually recommend these 5 because the visibility is clear, the current is relatively calm, and boat access from Labuan Bajo is straightforward:

  1. Manta Point — the iconic spot for seeing manta rays. Beginner-friendly depth (3-5 meters). But the current can pick up during seasonal transitions. Always wear a life jacket here, even if you're a strong swimmer.

  2. Pink Beach — pink sand beach with shallow reef along its edge. The most beginner-friendly spot. You can snorkel straight from the beach, no jumping off the boat needed.

  3. Kanawa Island — a private island 1.5 hours from Labuan Bajo. Healthy reef, plenty of small colorful fish. A good fit if you want to combine snorkeling with island-hopping.

  4. Taka Makassar — a white sand bar in the middle of the sea, reef circling it. Clear visibility, calm current in the mornings.

  5. Siaba Besar — turtle spot. Green turtles almost guaranteed. The reef is flat, snorkel-friendly for beginners.

These spots are usually combined into a single day trip covering 3-4 locations, running 8-10 hours from Labuan Bajo harbor.

Gear Worth Preparing

From what we see on the ground, this is the minimum gear for comfort and safety:

1. Personal mask + snorkel. You can rent from the boat trip, but rental masks are sometimes foggy or leaky. If you rent from Bajo Rental, we leak-check every mask before handing it over. Pricing starts at Rp50,000 per day.

2. Fins. Not strictly needed for beginners snorkeling at Pink Beach, but mandatory at Manta Point and any spot with current. Fins help you push against current and conserve energy. Rental starts at Rp40,000 per day.

3. Life jacket. Standard on every boat trip. But check the size fits properly. An oversized life jacket is more dangerous than no jacket at all because it can slip off mid-swim.

4. Dry bag. Minimum 10 liters for phone, camera, wallet. Boat trip decks are usually wet.

5. Reef-safe sunscreen. Regular sunscreen contains oxybenzone which damages coral. Komodo National Park has reef-safe sunscreen regulations, and several spots actually check your sunscreen before letting you in the water.

6. Underwater camera (optional). GoPro or similar action camera. Bajo Rental rents the GoPro Hero 12 starting at Rp150,000 per day, with a 128GB SD card included.

Sea Conditions You Should Know

Three conditions that catch guests off-guard if they're not prepared:

  • Current at Manta Point can be strong. Especially during seasonal transitions (late March - early April, late September - early October). Follow the boat guide's signals. If in doubt, snorkel on the calmer side first.
  • Jellyfish season runs November - March. Not the dangerous kind, but the sting itches. Bring a rash guard or thin wetsuit if you're snorkeling in this period.
  • Visibility peaks September - October. If your priority is clear views of mantas and reefs, target this window.

What's Not Allowed

Three things are tightly regulated in Komodo National Park:

  • Touching or stepping on coral. Coral grows 1-2 cm per year. One touch equals permanent damage. If you're tired, climb back on the boat — don't stand on the reef.
  • Feeding fish or mantas. Disrupts marine life behavior, damages the ecosystem.
  • Taking sand, shells, or coral home. Including from Pink Beach. Official park regulation.
