The fastest way to get from Lombok to Labuan Bajo is a direct Wings Air flight from Lombok International Airport (LOP) to Komodo Airport (LBJ), which takes about 1 hour 15 minutes. There are roughly two direct flights a day, with one-way fares from about Rp 1,500,000. If you would rather travel slow and cheap, a public ferry-and-bus route across Sumbawa costs under Rp 500,000 but takes two days or more.

Lombok and Labuan Bajo sit on two different islands with open sea between them, so every option is either a flight or a boat. Below we break down all three ways to make the crossing, with honest time and cost brackets, and what to do once you land.

The Three Ways to Get from Lombok to Labuan Bajo

There are three realistic routes, and they trade speed for price. Pick the one that matches your budget and how much time you have.

Route Time Approx. cost (one way) Best for
Direct flight (LOP→LBJ) ~1h15 in the air From ~Rp 1,500,000 Most travellers, limited time
Multi-day island-hopping boat 3 to 4 days A few million rupiah Backpackers wanting the journey to be the trip
Public ferry + overland bus 2 days or more Under ~Rp 500,000 Tight budgets, no fixed schedule

The flight is what most visitors choose. The boat trip is for travellers who want Komodo's islands as part of the journey. The ferry route is the cheapest but the longest by far.

Option 1: Fly from Lombok to Labuan Bajo (Fastest)

Flying is the simplest way to cross. Lombok's airport is Lombok International Airport (LOP) in Praya, and Labuan Bajo's is Komodo Airport (LBJ), a short drive from the harbour and town.

Direct flight. Wings Air operates the only nonstop service between the two, with around two flights a day and a flight time of about 1 hour 15 minutes. Departures usually fall in the late morning to early afternoon. One-way fares typically run from about Rp 1,500,000 to Rp 2,250,000, depending on how early you book and the season.

Connecting via Bali. Direct seats can sell out, especially in high season, because there are only a handful each day. The reliable fallback is to connect through Bali (Denpasar, DPS): a short hop from Lombok to Bali, then one of the many daily flights from Bali to Labuan Bajo. It takes longer with the layover, but there is far more availability.

Book ahead in the dry season (April to October), when Komodo trips peak and the direct flight fills early. A morning arrival also leaves you the afternoon to settle in or start a trip the same day.

Option 2: The Multi-Day Island-Hopping Boat (Scenic Route)

If the journey itself is part of your holiday, you can sail from Lombok to Labuan Bajo on a multi-day boat tour. These open-deck trips usually run 3 days 2 nights or 4 days 3 nights and island-hop east through Sumbawa and the Komodo region.

A typical route stops at places like Moyo Island, Satonda's crater lake, Komodo or Rinca to see the dragons, Pink Beach, and a Padar viewpoint before finishing in Labuan Bajo. You sleep onboard or camp on beaches, meals are included, and the price usually lands at a few million rupiah per person depending on the operator and comfort level.

This is the most memorable way to arrive, but it is slow and basic. Cabins are simple, sea conditions vary, and it only makes sense if you have several days to spare. If you love the idea of the islands but want comfort and your own schedule, a private charter from Labuan Bajo is the better tool for the actual Komodo trip, see our Komodo boat charter guide.

Option 3: The Public Ferry and Overland Route (Cheapest)

The budget route is a chain of public ferries and buses across Sumbawa. It is genuinely cheap, under about Rp 500,000 all in, but plan on two days or more and a lot of road time.

It breaks into three legs:

  1. Lombok to Sumbawa. A public car ferry runs from Kayangan port in East Lombok to Poto Tano in West Sumbawa, departing roughly hourly and taking around 1 to 2 hours.
  2. Across Sumbawa to Sape. A long overland stretch by bus or minivan, often overnight, from West Sumbawa through Bima to the eastern port town of Sape. This is the slow part, around 8 to 10 hours.
  3. Sape to Labuan Bajo. One ASDP car ferry a day links Sape to Labuan Bajo. It usually leaves in the morning, around 08:00 to 09:00, and reaches Labuan Bajo in the afternoon.

Many travellers buy a single combined bus ticket from Mataram to Bima that already includes the first ferry, then pay the short legs separately. It is the cheapest crossing in Indonesia's east, but it is for the patient.

Which Option Should You Choose?

Short on time: fly, and book the direct Wings Air flight early or connect via Bali. Travelling on a backpacker budget with days to spare and a love of the sea: take the island-hopping boat and let Komodo be the journey. Counting every rupiah and not in a hurry: the public ferry route will get you there for the price of a nice dinner, just bring patience.

For most visitors heading to Komodo, the flight wins. It turns a two-day slog into a 75-minute hop and leaves your energy for the islands themselves.

A one-way direct flight typically costs from about Rp 1,500,000 to Rp 2,250,000. A multi-day island-hopping boat usually runs to a few million rupiah per person. The public ferry-and-bus route is the cheapest at under about Rp 500,000, but takes two days or more.
